WOF inspections for light vehicles

A WOF (Warrant of Fitness) is a safety inspection required for most light vehicles in New Zealand to confirm the vehicle meets minimum road safety standards. P & B Group carries out WOF inspections for cars, utes, vans, trailers, caravans and many motorhomes from our Hamilton workshop.
WOF inspections cover key safety areas including tyres, suspension, brakes, steering, lights, seatbelts, wipers and other important vehicle safety components. The inspection helps identify visible safety concerns and wear that could affect the safe operation of the vehicle on New Zealand roads.
Most vehicles in New Zealand require a WOF inspection either every six or 12 or 24 months depending on the vehicle age. While a WOF confirms the vehicle met the required safety standard at the time of inspection, regular servicing and maintenance are still important for ongoing reliability and vehicle condition between inspections.

WOF repairs and proactive servicing

If a vehicle does not pass its WOF inspection, our workshop can carry out the repairs needed on-site. Common WOF failures can include tyres, suspension components, lights, brakes and steering-related issues. Unlike inspection-only providers, P & B Group can complete both the WOF inspection and the required repairs from the same workshop, making the process easier and more convenient for customers. There is no need to organise repairs elsewhere before returning for reinspection, and our team can explain clearly what work is needed and talk through the repair options before work begins.
Many customers choose to combine their WOF inspection with general servicing while the vehicle is already in the workshop. This can be a practical way to identify maintenance issues early and reduce the need for multiple bookings or workshop visits.

Trailer, caravan and motorhome WOF inspections

WOF inspections are also available for trailers, including boat trailers, along with caravans and light motorhomes. Motorhomes may require either a WOF or a COF depending on the vehicle’s weight, classification and how it is used. Generally, motorhomes over 3500kg require a COF as they are classed as heavy vehicles in New Zealand.
Trailers, caravans and motorhomes can sometimes develop issues related to tyres, lights, brakes, wheel bearings or suspension, particularly if they are not used regularly or spend long periods in storage. If repairs are required following inspection, our workshop can complete the work needed and help get the vehicle ready for reinspection.

Frequently Asked Questions for WOF Inspections

A failed vehicle may generally only be driven for the purpose of repair or reinspection, depending on the nature of the fault and whether the vehicle remains safe to operate. That's why P & B Group aim to get WOF repairs completed if possible during the same appointment as the WOF inspection.

Common reasons include worn tyres, suspension wear, faulty lights, brake issues, steering wear and damaged wiper blades. Regular servicing and maintenance can help identify these issues earlier.

Yes. Regular servicing can help identify worn tyres, brake issues, suspension wear, lighting faults and other problems before they become WOF failures.

Tyres wear continuously through normal driving, and issues like low tread depth, uneven wear or sidewall damage can affect vehicle safety and handling.
